Beyond the postcard
Utheemu Ganduvaru was the home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, the warrior and seafaring leader remembered for ending Portuguese rule in the Maldives in 1573.

Portuguese rule began in 1558. Mohamed Thakurufaanu and his brothers, Ali and Hassan, led a campaign across the islands, using their vessel Kalhuohfummi. They landed under cover of night and left before daybreak to evade capture.
The campaign culminated in victory in Malé in 1573, ending fifteen years of Portuguese occupation. The sea that connected these islands had also carried their resistance.
Thakurufaanu went on to rule as Sultan until his death in 1585. His victory is remembered each year on the Maldives’ National Day.
On Utheemu, remembrance is also an everyday act. Generations of islanders have cared for Ganduvaru, tending its sand-covered interior and grounds. As you explore, pause for that quieter story too: a community keeping its heritage close.

Choose five nights, with departure on day six, or seven nights, with departure on day eight. The seven-night experience includes a Kelaa island trip and barbecue lunch. Flight and transfer times are confirmed with your booking.
The package includes return domestic flights between Malé and Hanimaadhoo, plus shared local airport transfers. Please share your international travel plans with our team so they can help coordinate your arrival.
